RVT Dashcam Installation Guide – Australian Market

Introduction

This installation guide provides instructions on installing the Rand McNally Video Telematics dash camera (RVT). The instructions cover the installation of the dash camera in a light vehicle. The exact instructions can be used when installing into a light or medium commercial vehicle.

Note: This guide contains images of the RVT ProAI Dashcam, which the RVT ProAI 2 Dashcam has now replaced. The installation instructions for the RVT ProAI 2 Dashcam are however, the same as the RVT ProAI Dashcam.

You will need

  • Your Rand McNally RVT ProAI / ProAI 2 dashcam.
  • Recommended tools and sundries (see below)
  • A mobile device with the Rand McNally Manager app installed and access to the Installer portal (or web app).
  • Before installation, please ensure your asset ignition is switched off and the asset is parked outside on a level surface with a clear view of the sky.

Tip: Create Rand Platform user accounts for any colleague or contractor who will be completing your device installations. Invite them with the user role of “Installer” and their access will be restricted to the Installer Portal only.

Recommended Tools:  

  • Cordless drill and drill bits
  • Philips and flathead screwdrivers
  • Ratchet & socket set (5mm to 17mm)
  • Panel removers

Recommended sundries:

  • Cable/Zip ties
  • Electrical tape
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Rags

Device Installation

Step 1: Plan the dashcam mount position

  • Plan the placement of the dashcam before sticking the bracket to the windscreen.
  • If it is very hot/cold outside, heat up or cool down the cabin to get the windscreen to an appropriate temperature.
  • The desired location for mounting the dashcam is the midline of the windscreen, directly underneath the rear-view mirror (figure 1).
  • If the centre of the windscreen is an obstruction to the driver’s line of vision, the dashcam can be offset towards the passenger side of the windscreen (figure 2).

Step 2: Locate the OBDII port and prepare to run cables

  • The OBDII port will be located in the driver’s footwell. You may need to remove the cowling to access the port.
  • Remove the cowling from the driver-side pillar.

Step 3: Mount the dashcam to the windowscreen

  • Clean the mounting surface with rubbing alcohol before adhering the mounting bracket to the windscreen.
  • Locate the centre of the windscreen and hold the dashcam as high as possible underneath the rearview mirror.
  • Remove the dashcam mount adhesive film and adhere the mounting bracket by pressing the bracket firmly on to the windscreen. (Up indication on the mounting bracket must point towards the vehicle roof).
  • Secure the dashcam to the mounting bracket with the provided Phillips screws.
  • Adjust the dashcam position to be as vertical as possible.

Tip: Consider the following when mounting the dashcam.

  • That the sun visor does not block the driver or road-facing camera view when down.
  • Avoid obstructing the rearview mirror.
  • Any areas the windscreen wipers do not clear.
  • That the camera should not obstruct the driver’s view.
  • That the camera is a little further than arm’s length from the driver.

Step 4: Run the cabling

  • Run the wiring cables along the car roof lining and down the driver-side pillar to the driver’s footwell.

Step 5: Connect the OBDII harness

Connect the OBDII harness to the OBDII port of the vehicle.

Tip: An optional y-harness (splitter cable) can also be used to hide the cabling, provide a covert installation, and leave the OBDII port available for servicing.

Step 6: Power up the dashcam

Turn the ignition on for the vehicle to power up the dashcam.

  • On the first power-up, all indicator lights will illuminate red.
  • The indicator lights will individually turn off over the next 2-3 minutes, leaving the power light illuminated green.

Step 7: Activate your device on Rand Platform

  1. Log into the Rand McNally Manager app (the web application can also be used) and navigate to the Installer Portal v2 under the Tools menu.


  2. Enter the device ID (the Serial Number located under the barcode) into the search bar and click ‘GO.’

  3. Click on the device to open the device details screen.

  4. Select your installation option;
    • Link to Existing Asset → Search by the Asset Label or Registration to select the Asset you want to install the Device into.

    • Create a New Asset.

  5. Fill out the asset information;
    • Label (Mandatory) – This is your asset’s name on the platform (e.g. Vehicle identifier/asset number, nickname, registration, etc.). If you select Link to Existing Asset, the Assets current label will display in this field.
    • Group – Select the Group to assign the Asset to. The default group is “All Assets” when creating a new Asset. If you select Link to Existing Asset, the Group the Existing Asset is currently assigned to will display in this field. Learn more about Groups.
    • Fuel Type – Select the Fuel Type of the Asset (this field will only display for Telematics device types that can capture fuel data). 
    • Rego – Asset registration (Licence plate number).
    • ODO – Current odometer reading of the Asset (relevant for vehicles).
    • Runtime – Current Engine hours (relevant for plant equipment and off-road equipment).
    • Installer – The name of the person installing the device.
    • Installation Location – The geographic location where the installation was completed (e.g. street address, depot/terminal name, etc.)
  6. Start vehicle ignition and idle the vehicle OR switch on the power circuit of the Asset.
  7. Confirm device activation using the device health field to check its current status.
    • Not Deployed: Click the refresh button to run the device online check. Give the device several minutes to come online. 
    • Online: The device is activated, and you can proceed to the next step.

  8. To complete the installation, click the Complete Install button.
    Note: The Complete Install button will only be active to select once you have entered an Asset Label.
    • You will be displayed a Success dialogue.

    • Close the dialogue by selecting OK.
    • The Device page will reload; you will see the linked asset details and an Uninstall button.

Step 8: Upload installation photos.

After the device is securely mounted and you have activated it on Rand Platform,  upload images of the installation. You can view these later, and they will aid you with future support and troubleshooting.

  1. Use your mobile device to take photos of:
    • The device’s label/barcode showing the device ID/IMEI/ESN.
    • The securely mounted device.
    • The Asset’s VIN plate (where relevant).
    • The Asset dashboard clearly showing the ODO/Engine Hours reading (where relevant).
    • The Asset’s license plate.
    • Return to the Rand McNally installer portal on your mobile device.
  2. Return to the device detail screen
    • Return to the device detail screen
    • Select the ‘Docs’ tab at the bottom of the screen.
    • Select ‘Choose file’, which will open your device’s file browser/camera roll.
    • Select the images from your camera roll/photo library and upload.
