What Is a Harsh Driving Event?
A harsh event is a recorded instance of sudden or forceful vehicle movement, such as rapid acceleration, heavy braking, or sharp cornering. These events are detected by your tracking device using internal motion sensors.
Event Types
- Harsh Acceleration: Sudden or rapid increase in vehicle speed.
- Harsh Braking: Heavy or sudden braking.
- Harsh Cornering: Sharp or forceful turning.
How Are Harsh Events Detected?
Harsh driving events are captured using G-force measurements from the device’s internal digital gyroscope.
They are not triggered by how far or how hard the accelerator or brake pedal is pressed. What matters is the level of force experienced by the device attached to the vehicle during acceleration, braking, or cornering.
Does the Mounting Orientation of the Device Matter?
No. The device automatically learns its own orientation inside the vehicle, identifying forward, backward, left, and right on its own, so the mounting angle is not critical.
However, secure mounting is essential.
The accuracy of harsh event data depends directly on how firmly the device is installed. A loose device may move independently of the vehicle and register its own movement rather than the vehicle’s movement. This can lead to inaccurate or excessive event reports.
Why Am I Seeing More Harsh Events Than Expected?
The most common cause is a device that is not firmly secured. If the device can move around, it may record its own movement as a harsh event rather than actual vehicle behavior.
Always ensure that your device is tightly mounted with no play or wobble.
- Confirm the device is firmly attached and cannot be moved by hand.
- Check that the mounting surface is solid and not loose or vibrating excessively.
- Monitor events over the following days to see if reports return to expected levels.
If excessive harsh events persist after confirming secure installation, please contact Technical Support so they can investigate further.
